Countless street tiles are scattered under our feet, and when a cluster of stones is full of cracks, they seem to want to resist the function they are supposed to perform; carrying the daily burden of thousands of anonymous feet. What happens when these materials are taken out of their daily context and allowed to perform a different function? Do they then transform as autonomous, self-contained art objects, as carriers of photographic material, rather than the everyday passerby?

In the context of their work, Boiten associates construction materials with resources and building blocks prepared to become part of something new, as a metaphor for (self)transformation. However, in Utrecht, where Boiten grew up, and Rotterdam, the city where they now live, it does not feel as if construction actually leads to renewal. Roads are paved and cracks in that asphalt are plastered up again with so-called bitumen. New construction houses consist of hundreds of thousands of identical bricks, filled with countless identical living rooms, bathrooms and kitchens. Uniformity and homogeneity are tangible and visible as a normalized (urban) ideal.

Boiten's research on the theme of gender chafes with this homogeneous ideal. Like the cracked paving stones and cracks in the asphalt, the concept of gender cannot be placed in homogeneous and/or heteronormative frameworks. In this spatial installation, Boiten experiments with pulling building materials out of their normal context. By placing them as image-bearing characters in a narrative, Boiten, using photographic archival material, constructs a story that deals with autonomous transformation and resistance to uniformity.
The installation will be on view at Pennings Foundation in Eindhoven from 30.11.24-01.03.25&#60;img width="3000" height="2400" width_o="3000" height_o="2400" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/822f5f4e96713360cf299b91641a47781e8d9b5d9f469f358828ec099a531ea0/Overview.jpg" data-mid="222692543" border="0" alt="Installation shot at Pennings Foundation" data-caption="Installation shot at Pennings Foundation" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/822f5f4e96713360cf299b91641a47781e8d9b5d9f469f358828ec099a531ea0/Overview.jpg" /&#62;

Our research focused on Yōkai, Japanese folklore stories about monstrous creatures that question the relationship between humans and their environment, such as nature, the urban environment, or objects. Coming from a Dutch cultural background, we were intrigued to find the aliveness of

Yōkai folklore storytelling in historical and contemporary Japanese daily life. These folklore tellings have everlasting influence on individuals’ relationality to their surroundings and challenge rationalism and dualist thinking. But they can also be tied to broader research concepts than just that of folklore storytelling.&#38;nbsp; Amongst other things, Yōkai reflect on our relationship to nature and can be tied to ecocentrism and animalism, but also have strong ties with monster sciences and spatial liminality, aspects that are also found within queer and gender studies. We focused our research on discovering the areas and locations these
Yōkai are typically found, and captured them on film and photo’s, some of which we are developing further into a poetic documentary film and installation to be exhibited at a later point in time.

During our stay in Kyoto, as part of the *** in Residence network, we collected personal stories about Yōkai, visited the Toei Kyoto Studio Park to witness the Parade of the 100

Yōkai festival, and researched the contemporary influence and meaning of

Yōkai to discover how we can use them to understand contemporary notions of climate change and gender. Our research accumulated in a narrative story-sharing and -telling workshop, film and audio recordings, paper pulp sculptures and photographs. On the 13th of November, we temporarily situated these outcomes as an installation in Taikou-kyo, the 400-year old tea-masters house in the Western region of Kyoto we were allocated to work in during our stay in Japan. We experimented with projecting our video footage on the traditional sliding doors that were found in the house, and invited paper-pulp plant sculptures to invade the house through cracks in the traditional wooden floors.

This research project combines Floor Snels’ focus on ecofeminism and animism with my focus on (digital) liminality and gender. Using Yōkai folklore, we asked ourselves how we could recontextualize contemporary concepts of ecological crisis and gender from a lens that was new to us. On the 15th of November we presented our summarized findings during an intimite presentation at Bridge Studios in the Eastern part of Kyoto.&#60;img width="4672" height="6224" width_o="4672" height_o="6224" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9c4df55fd3c279430a74acec2fbaa030609a350ab5c8901fc39312cca774bab7/DSC08753.jpg" data-mid="242516776" border="0" data-scale="50" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9c4df55fd3c279430a74acec2fbaa030609a350ab5c8901fc39312cca774bab7/DSC08753.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="4296" height="5723" width_o="4296" height_o="5723" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7daa5005f2a280eb1cff4dc468825ec5abb8d1de3a4d0d9491ebddbea2fbb84c/DSC08789.jpg" data-mid="242516653" border="0" data-scale="50" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7daa5005f2a280eb1cff4dc468825ec5abb8d1de3a4d0d9491ebddbea2fbb84c/DSC08789.jpg" /&#62;

VIDEO-INSTALLATION&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 2024

In this multimedia installation you travel to an imaginary world, which originates from Boiten's personal search for their gender identity. The video figures you encounter along the way represent the freedom that the digital world can offer. Digital infrastructure, such as forums and online games, play an increasingly important role in the self-development of contemporary individuals.

Boiten discovered that in the digital world you can always and at any time change your identity and persona. The title of the work refers to a vision of the future that is literally and figuratively still in the making: a digital world in which everyone has complete freedom to be who they want to be. The title ‘The future is under construction’ is a citation from the book ‘Xenofeminism’ by Helen Hester.

With this work, the artist questions the limiting definitions of the constructed binary gender spectrum, and speculates about the liberating feeling of moving beyond a binary set of gender definitions, while taking into account the importance of ‘labels’ for the representation of otherwise oppressed individuals. Searching for the right ‘label’ can also be confusing, because you do not always recognize yourself in the expectations that society has built surrounding these different gender identities.

The installation invites the viewer to step onto a robust metal sculpture and propel itself into polyester tunnels, to be immersed in futuristic and utopian worlds. Here, they interact with technology, nature, and living entities, embodied as an alien and a polar bear. They are invited to listen to a speculative dicussion about the potentiality of a queer utopia, and fantasize about what such a utopia would look like if they were to create it for themselves.

they will&#38;nbsp;perceive with their eyes&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
VIDEO-INSTALLATION&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 2023 (ongoing)
 that what they have difficulty comprehending with their ears, they will perceive with their eyes,&#38;nbsp;is a three-channel video installation made in collaboration with artist Floor Snels during a 2 month residency period at BIJ/NA in the StadsGalerij in Breda. The video installation is made up of three large-scale metal frames on which are projected three enormous insects; a beetle, a moth, and a wasp.&#38;nbsp; The three dead insects, that were collected during the residency in the gallery space we worked in, were 3D-scanned using macro photogrammetry scans and converted to extremely
high-resolution 3D-objects. Their heads, now proportionally far outscaling those of the visitors they look down upon, are facing each other. They engage in a dialogue from three perspectives: one from an ecoholistic point, one from an anthropocentric point, and another from a historically questioning one. Together they question their relationship to humans, reflecting and inversing this question upon the audience; how do we value insects, are we capable of building a relationship with these non-human entities, and if so, what would that relationship look like?

&#60;img width="6000" height="4000" width_o="6000" height_o="4000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/99a23e29c056eba38ca388a5cf8e77acaaa4db369c28cd3e2b2de5dc71d501fa/Wide_2-FINAL.jpg" data-mid="208296214" border="0" alt="Installation documentation at BIJ/NA residency exhibit 16.09.23-01.10.23" data-caption="Installation documentation at BIJ/NA residency exhibit 16.09.23-01.10.23" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/99a23e29c056eba38ca388a5cf8e77acaaa4db369c28cd3e2b2de5dc71d501fa/Wide_2-FINAL.jpg" /&#62;
&#60;img width="6000" height="4000" width_o="6000" height_o="4000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d2e57e982f08bdee173cb253ba848a25c20d07b66359320c11108e36dda3b1d5/Wide_3FINAL.jpg" data-mid="208296215" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d2e57e982f08bdee173cb253ba848a25c20d07b66359320c11108e36dda3b1d5/Wide_3FINAL.jpg" /&#62;

The project is shaped to our first collaborative research subject; AI face rezognition. It is becoming more common for our behavior and emotions being monitored online with the use of artifial intelligence facial recognition software. This is being done for a multitude of reasons, ranging from monitoring consumers buying-habits to controlling and censoring political opinion or opposition. But what we found intriguing about this software is that it recognizes and quantifies human emotion. It is because we can train AI models to give meaning to emotions of hapiness, anger, or sadness, that these facial recognition models can be used for capitalist or political purposes, we can give value to human emotion.
We wondered what would happen if we fantasized about a similar technique employed on insects, instead of humans. If we were to be able to get as close to the faces of insects as we can to human faces, could we deduct emotions from their facial expressions? And if we could, would this allow us to form an emotional connection with these entities? These questions have shaped the initial, and ongoing research of this project.

&#60;img width="6000" height="4000" width_o="6000" height_o="4000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f35229feb345ffbdab16910cf7573e093ae29c08384d133caffedb72df8fb53f/DSC06198.jpg" data-mid="218519134" border="0" alt="Installation documentation at Greylight Project exhibit 01.06.2024 - 13.07.2024" data-caption="Installation documentation at Greylight Project exhibit 01.06.2024 - 13.07.2024" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f35229feb345ffbdab16910cf7573e093ae29c08384d133caffedb72df8fb53f/DSC06198.jpg" /&#62;

During the developing of the work for a new group show at Greylight Projects in Heerlen, in collaboration with Fenna Koot, we reimagined the installation to become a more spatial adaptation of the original project. The project gained a focus on the research process into emotional connection to non-human entities, rather than trying to give a voice to these non-human entities. By acknowledging our human incapability to truly understand and respectfully give voice to non-human entities, we rather emphasize different ways in which we can attempt to get a better understanding of non-human entities. By continuing our experimentation with 3D-macro-photography of found insects and by researching archival material like medieval bestiaries and digital libraries of high-resolution 3D-scans, we emphasize the somewhat magical and fictitious ways in which humans approach non-human entities in an attempt to understand and define them.

		<description>&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Unknown flash drives&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; DIGITAL ARCHIVAL MATERIAL COLLECTED ON SEPERATE FLASH DRIVES &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; 2024

From September 2023 - May 2024 I took part in talent development program Lighthouse, developed and with support of Stichting FOTODOK in Utrecht. During this program we developed our entrepeneurship and grew our networks, with the help of tutors and external experts provided to us from within the program. Together with 9 other young lens-based artists we organised a theatrical network dinner on May 15th, to say farewell to our time at FOTODOK and challenged ourselves to come up with small, bite-sized ways in which we could share some of our work with our guests.
I chose to gift every guest we invited a unique flash drive on which I uploaded archival files I encountered on digital archives online. The challenge I set myself was to find a way to connect myself and my practice to the files I gifted on the drives. In order to achieve that, I set out to find files, ranging from images, video’s and audio files, that were produced in the year 1999, the same year in which I was born. Something unique those files and I have in common, is the year in which we started living and experiencing, but more so, each of us grew up alongside the same internet, and witnessed its development parallel to ours. B
&#60;img width="3024" height="4032" width_o="3024" height_o="4032" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/51da1e3e439d7ecd5a2b6d6ddc81f5e503f5d6848904525b213f574e19fc94a5/IMG-6191.jpg" data-mid="224724354" border="0" alt="Cookie&#38;rsquo;s Bustle Big Box Pack-In Ham Slice by RODIK, Hormel, 1999" data-caption="Cookie’s Bustle Big Box Pack-In Ham Slice by RODIK, Hormel, 1999" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/51da1e3e439d7ecd5a2b6d6ddc81f5e503f5d6848904525b213f574e19fc94a5/IMG-6191.jpg" /&#62;
ecause of this, it feels like the files and I share a common history. I even imagined maybe accidentally having bumped into them before, when I was younger, similarly to if we would’ve locked eyes in a bus, the supermarket, or at the pool, and then forgot about it again, like we do daily with so many other people around us.
Each flash drive contained a unique selection and variety of files, so that the guests would have to share information and exchange drives to be able to see them all. And for each drive I made a matching foldable publication, that gave the guest information about the file, like the date it was produced, the name of the user that uploaded it,&#38;nbsp; or the amount of likes or comments it got.&#38;nbsp;

Overview of all of the flash drives

It still comforts me, to think that these flash drives live somewhere, in the bottom of someone’s purse, forgotten at a community printer at the library, or stowed away safely in a little box with other flash drives. And the files that were given a home within these drives have been caressed again by stranger’s eyes.
Maybe someday one or more of the drives will find their way back to me, or be used to store additional files, in any way it feels like they carry a part of me and are being kept and loved again.

INSTALLATION&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;  &#38;nbsp; 2024
Collaborative project with Luna Bongers.

Tile/File/Vile is a multi-media installation of tiles, plaster, metal grid, photo imprint and videos. The work portrays structures of decay as well as enacting the process of deterioration and documents the manner in which the city tends to deal with different forms of this decay. In doing so, it represents acts of demolition, concealment, and homogenisation within urban space; both physically, socially and digitally. The smooth surface of urban landscape collides with the chaotic undercurrent of virtual space, where anomalies emerge - glitches, errors and imperfections that defy the rigid order of the urban environment. In concealing and controlling the few chaotic expressions stashed away in both urban and digital space, there is no room left for disobedience, obscurity or eccentricity in relation to the norm.

UNTITLED (I-III) &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; Triptich laser-jet phototransfer prints on street&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;bricks&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 2024

On holiday in Cordoba, Spain in early 2024 I encountered countless nearly identical cracks in a bridge crossing the Rio Guadalquivir river. Small crass stems pressed their way through the cracks in the pavement, tiny signs of life in an otherwise homogenous, smooth and grey surface.I photographed the cracks and printed them on stolen street bricks, that were destined to form an equally homogenous pavement in the streets of Rotterdam two months later. The work bridges an uncomfortable gap between practicality and unpracticality; the tiles being unusual materials to be placed within a gallery context, while being extremely practical materials for urban construction.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; WE DON’T LIVE IN A VOID&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 34 vacuum-sealed rocks &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 2024

We don’t live in a void relates to new materialist theory and the concept that everything is entangled and influences each other. Accordingly, decay is something
inevitable, as it is the process and result of everything constantly influencing and affecting
each other. We don’t live in a void, we are not separate from our surroundings but very much
part of it.&#38;nbsp;However, in our current cityscapes decay is being increasingly hidden and
diminished and becomes more and more rare and fragile. Vacuum sealing stones is an
absurd yet tender act of preservation that signifies preserving and immortalising decay as an&#38;nbsp;inherent aspect of urban life. It is a call against the process of standardisation and smoothing
out the city and rather advocates for allowing discrepancies, weirdness, and spontaneity.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; MIXED-MEDIA VIDEO-INSTALLATION
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 2023Graduation Project 2023
St. Joost School of Art &#38;amp; Design

I used to think I wanted to be a boy growing up. I chose male avatars when playing videogames and wore my hair short. Now I don’t know what I am or want to be anymore. Though the societal debate around gender inclusivity has started opening up, I still feel pressured to pick a descriptive label. Not knowing what I am feels like a burden,
though it shouldn’t. Instead of picking pronouns to identify with I choose to look for my reflection elsewhere. The internet is one of such places, its fluid and hybrid digital environment full of unknown possibilities lurking invisibly
in the background, waiting to be discovered.
The online sphere plays an increasingly important role in shaping our (gender) identities. We are often exposed to digital culture at a young age, and much of our adolescent life also partially plays out on the internet. Growing up with a medium like the internet within arm’s reach gives me a unique understanding of this platform. The language
spoken on the internet is like a second mother tongue for me and my generation, making the internet much like a digital extension of our reality. The online spaces embedded
within the internet’s network are flexible and allow for uncertainty and unrecognizability. They are spaces for the the non-defined or unidentifiable that don’t seem to belong anywhere else. It’s spaces like these that I’m attracted
to, with a massive stream of image production and consumption and endless tools for diverse representation. This digital sphere provides a safe space for those who
might not know what they are yet.
My fascination for the materiality of the digital network and the underlying relationship between people and images
form the conceptual basis of this three-part mixed-media video-installation. By combining elements of sculpture, video and animation, I investigate the role of contemporary digital image culture and the virtual space in our exploration
and understanding of gender identity.
